WELCOME TO ARCH 342!

Introduction to Green Buildings

About this course

This course introduces the theory and application of climate, energy use, and comfort in shaping small-scale architectural design.

The first half covers sustainable design principles, including physics, human comfort, climate strategies, solar geometry, and solar design.

The second half focuses on architectural methods like sun shading, site and envelope design, lighting, heat transfer, mechanical systems, and acoustics. It prepares students for design courses like Arch 332 and 334 and aligns with Cal Poly’s Arch 207 Environmental Controls I.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives:

SLO 1:

Evaluate the ethical, social, and environmental impacts of energy-conscious design by analyzing building orientation, contextual factors, and the relationship between form, scale, and location. Compare renewable and non-renewable energy sources to assess their effects on sustainability and user experience.

SLO 2:

Assess and compare building systems based on sustainability, energy efficiency, and human comfort. Apply principles of sound, light, and thermal performance to make informed design choices, integrating solar geometry, daylighting, shading, and photovoltaic systems while considering material conservation and waste reduction.

SLO 3:

Demonstrate independent learning, effective teamwork, and a commitment to lifelong education by engaging in research, collaboration, and professional development within the field of architecture. These ensure consistency while maintaining the key ideas. Let me know if you’d like further refinements!

What architects are saying about Green Building:

“Building sustainably is not a choice; it is a responsibility. We must create architecture that serves the people and the planet.”
